3 Key Elements to Keep Your Energy High
Whether you’re a leader, manager, or director in an agency or in-house, your goal is the same: to build teams that generate high-quality sign-ups in the shortest time possible. Performance is crucial for the health of your project. To succeed, you need clear objectives, skills (training), and, most importantly, the right mindset.
Mindset is about your team’s ability to maintain the right state of mind, one that drives them toward their goals, regardless of outside circumstances. Today, we’ll focus on three elements that can help keep that mindset strong: breathing, internal dialogue, and movement.
What are a few situations where changing your state might be required?
Fundraiser: Rejection fatigue - Constant rejection can wear you down and make you question your approach.
Leader: Team burnout - Your team is tired, and you need to lift their energy without pushing them to the point of exhaustion.
Manager: Underperformance - Some team members are underperforming, and despite your best efforts, it’s affecting overall morale.
These energy drains are part of the job - whether you’re on the field, in team meetings, or at the office. Let’s explore how you can start to shift your mindset and break the negative cycle.
1. Breathing – The Easiest Way to Shift Your State
Breathing exercises are one of the simplest and most effective tools for changing your state. Whether it's Pranayama or Huberman's "psychological sigh" (https://bit.ly/3CqX8bX), find what works best for you. I’ve found that simply counting my breaths helps—I once got to 36 before losing track. Another approach is to match the length of your inhales and exhales, like five seconds in, five seconds out. It’s a quick and easy way to reset your mind.
2. Internal Dialogue – Reframing Negative Thoughts
When triggered, it’s easy for our internal dialogue to turn negative. This is where reframing comes in. Ask yourself empowering questions:
How can this situation be the best teacher for me?
How can this help me achieve my goals?
How does this situation help me grow?
The key is to commit to finding an answer that truly empowers you, rather than staying stuck in negativity.
3. Movement – Change Your Body, Change Your Mind
Emotions like fear and sadness are often felt physically. Movement, whether it's a short walk, a bit of cardio, or even dancing, releases endorphins and reduces stress. It boosts blood flow to your brain, improving focus and mental clarity.
I used to dance almost every day while fundraising, it kept my energy high and made me feel connected to my team.
Understanding the Process
Changing your state isn’t instant. It’s a process that requires patience and self-awareness. When you’re determined to shift your mindset, you’ll face negative emotions, but you must accept them and work through them. These emotions won’t disappear right away, and that’s okay. This transitional period is part of the process, and with patience and trust, you’ll reach a more positive state.
Remember, mindset is especially important when your objectives are clear. Without them, your natural tendency will be to conserve energy, doing the bare minimum to avoid failure. With the right mindset, you’ll exceed your goals and achieve outstanding performance.
